When John Kirk planted the first vines in 1971 he had no idea that his vineyard would one day be celebrated as one of the best, and most iconic in the country. It is now run by Tim, one of John’s five sons. Over time Clonakilla’s success has made something important very clear: Murrumbateman and Shiraz are one of those rare combinations in the world of wine that can produce something truly exciting.

Family owned and operated, Shaw Vineyard Estate is in Murrumbateman, the heart of the Canberra District wine region. Their new building is spectacular and very deserving of the architectural awards received.
A producer of premium cool climate wines, they won Best Australian Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2018 London International Wine Challenge for their 2015 Reserve Merriman. Enjoy cheese platters and charcuterie platters with your tastings if you’re after a snack to keep you going or a lighter lunch.
You’ll find a unique range of hand-made and hand-painted Italian ceramics for sale at their exciting new cellar door. In the adjoining restaurant, Olleyville, enjoy breakfast on weekends, lunch Wed to Sun and dinner Wed to Sat.

Ken Helm is a 4th generation descendant of German vignerons who planted vines in Albury/ Rutherglen in 1850s. Helm Wines of Murrumbateman was established by Ken and Judith Helm in 1973. They are pioneers of the Canberra District and specialise in Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. Helm’s approach includes two dedicated wineries on the site for the exclusive production of the two wines and the wines have a long reputation for quality and consistency.
The winery enjoys a five red star rating by James Halliday and in Huon Hooke’s 2018 Top Wineries of Australia. The Cellar Door is the heritage listed 1888 Toual School House, which has been faithfully restored.
Open daily except Tuesdays and Wednesday. Summer hours: (September 30 to April 30) 10.00am–5.00pm. Winter hours: (May 1 to October 1) 10.00am–4.00pm.

The Vitner’s Daughter is owned and operated by husband and wife team, Stephanie Helm & Benjamin Osborne and creates unique small batch wines from estate grown grapes. The vineyard is not far from where Stephanie grew up learning to make wine from her winemaker and vintner father, Ken Helm. In fact, Stephanie made her first wine at the ripe old age of nine! The winery produces Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz and limited fortified wines.

Eden Road’s Cellar Door is charming. It’s located adjacent to the bustling winery and the tasting space is open plan with views across lawns and estate vineyards. Summer sees guests spilling outside onto the adjoining gardens, while in winter it’s very cosy despite the grand size of the space. A simple tasting bar is bookended with used oak barrels and with barrels of maturing wine lined through the room.
One of Eden Road’s best assets is its welcoming, attentive and knowledgeable Cellar Door staff. The breadth of wines on offer allows for a definitive guide to Canberra District’s marque varieties of Shiraz and Riesling. The peripheral wine growing areas of Tumbarumba, Gundagai and Hilltops from where Eden Road additionally sources grapes, are also showcased.

Long Rail Gully is a family owned winery just north of Murrumbateman. Four Winds are excited to announce they are also the new custodians of Kyeema Estate, giving access to new varieties – Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Viognier. A menu devised by head Chef, Anthony Davis, offers something special for locals and visitors with traditional, rustic, shareable plates to family feasts. You will be able to enjoy antipasto boards and cheese plates featuring local farm produce if looking for a light eat. Homemade pastries baked by an in-house pastry chef with coffee from Little Marionette are also on offer. Wanting something more substantial? An excellent menu offering wood fired pizzas, classics, feasts from the wood oven, a variety of mains and excellent sides is available. The central wood fire dominates the menu direction!
Of course, being located on the Shaw Vineyard Estate, all dishes will be perfectly paired with one of the cool climate wines that the vineyard is best known for.

Grazing is located in the historic Royal Hotel in Gundaroo, close to the Gundog Estate’s Cellar Door. It’s a multi award winning restaurant whose philosophy with food is simple: “we aim to serve good size portions of great food, made with the freshest possible ingredients”. They don’t serve anything too fussy, just combinations of flavours and textures that appeal to the senses.

BRUNCH or LUNCH at Poachers Pantry
The Smokehouse Restaurant is all about the meats they cure and smoke and the wines that come from their vineyard that grows on the hills that surround the restaurant. Poachers Pantry uses organic ingredients from their own kitchen garden; the herbs and vegetables are picked fresh every morning and delivered straight to the kitchen. The menu is constantly changing so that they can use local ingredients that are at their best.
The restaurant is open daily.
