Wine Tours around Canberra District Wine Region with leading Canberra chauffeur service Let’s Go Places Canberra are a fabulous Grape Escape!

The Canberra District Wine Region may be small but we punch well above our weight when it comes to fabulous wine. Revered wine critic James Halliday has rated 10 of our wineries 5 stars or more – the highest ranking he can give!

Canberra’s climate is cool by Australian standards, and so grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz as well as Riesling and Pinot Noir flourish.

Grapes were first planted in the area in the 1850s near Yass, but the District’s first commercial vineyards were planted in 1971.  Today the region has over 40 wineries, approximately 150 vineyards, and a production of more than 2 million bottles of wine annually.  Boutique wineries dot the region and many are producing hand-crafted and award winning wines.

So why not come along and find out for yourself just how good the Canberra District Wines are … you won’t be disappointed…!

Grape Escapes, in conjunction with the very experienced chauffeurs of Let’s Go Places Canberra, offers a range of personalised chauffeured driven Canberra District wine tours for small numbers of clients (1-4 persons).  Our wine tours can be tailored to those who would like to enjoy a day sipping wines, sampling local produce and improving their wine knowledge.  Typically, a full day starts with your chauffeur driver picking you up from home or hotel at around 09.30am. You’ll then visit at least four wineries (either suggested by us, or of your choosing) during the day and, of course, you’ll stop for a leisurely lunch. Your chauffeur service would then have you homeward bound by 4.30 – 5.00pm.  A half day wine tour (four hours) is usually a later start with your chauffeur taking you first to a winery in the morning.  Stop for lunch at your favoured restaurant and on to another winery or two during the afternoon.

Our Canberra chauffeured service for a full day wine tour is $680, and includes each winery’s charges for tastings.  A half day wine tour is $380. Lunch and/or epicurean plates are additional costs and are to be paid by you at the winery.

It has been a remarkable journey for Clonakilla.  When John Kirk planted the first vines in 1971 he had no idea that his vineyard would one day be celebrated as one of the best, and most iconic in the country. It is now run by Tim, one of John’s five sons.  Over time Clonakilla’s success has made something important very clear: Murrumbateman and Shiraz are one of those rare combinations in the world of wine that can produce something truly exciting.

Eden Road’s Cellar Door is charming. It’s located adjacent to the bustling winery and the tasting space is open plan with views across lawns and estate vineyards.  Summer sees guests spilling outside onto the adjoining gardens, while in winter it’s very cosy despite the grand size of the space.  A simple tasting bar is bookended with used oak barrels and with barrels of maturing wine lined through the room.

One of Eden Road’s best assets is its welcoming, attentive and knowledgeable Cellar Door staff.  The breadth of wines on offer allows for a definitive guide to Canberra District’s marque varieties of Shiraz and Riesling. The peripheral wine growing areas of Tumbarumba, Gundagai and Hilltops from where Eden Road additionally sources grapes, are also showcased.

Simplicity is the key at Eden Road’s Cellar Door with energy focused on conversation and tasting the award-winning wines. This is supported by a simple and easy menu.
